Exploring the environmental impact of textile production processes; fibre cultivation and production, yarn spinning, fabric construction (weave, knit and nonwovens) and finishing. Textile end-use, reuse, recycling, consumption, LCA, circularity and biomimicry through interdisciplinary research working with (but not limited to) polymer science, biomaterials, chemical engineering, chemistry and fashion business.
My research interests centre around sustainability and the circular economy. I am particularly fascinated by the end-of-life treatment of garments and how they can be “recycled”. I have conducted research on various end-of-life practices, including, but not limited to swapping and renting, and am currently exploring what other opportunities may be to divert fashion from landfill.
I am a Lecturer and Researcher in Fashion Digital Media at Manchester Metropolitan University. I was awarded my EPSRC DTA funded PhD in Digital Marketing from The University of Manchester, January 2021. My main areas of expertise are in e-commerce, digital marketing, sustainability, and digital innovation, utilising qualitative and quantitative methods of inquiry. My strengths are in research in sustainable materials, sourcing, and investigating projects where there are sustainable outcomes. In my spare time I make handmade paper using a deckle making rag paper reusing natural fibres as well as abaca and mulberry reeds. I am interested in the outcomes of biomimicry using a substrate. I joined the University of Leeds as a Lecturer in Creative Advertising and Brand Design in 2022. In 2012, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Art Design from Donghua University, and in 2013, I received a master’s degree in Fashion Merchandising from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). I am a Senior Lecturer in Fashion Business in the Department of Materials, The University of Manchester. My research focuses on digital strategy & innovation in the fashion retail industry. In particular, my research specialises in how technology can be used to improve social & environmental sustainability in fashion retailing & fashion marketing, as well as digital marketing and immersive technologies (and more recently, the metaverse). I was trained as a traditional printmaker in Italy, where I gained advanced skills in textile printing. In 2017 I took specific courses at Leeds College of Art focusing on sustainable textile printing and natural dyes. During my PhD at the University of Leeds, I started maturing an interest in heritage innovation, especially in relation to fashion craft practices. I teach fashion marketing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at York St John University and am an external examiner on the MA Fashion, Society and Enterprise degree at University of Leeds, so I have a broad interest in fashion, specifically with regards consumer behaviour and fashion communications. My industry experience is in journalism and content creation, and my PhD explored the impact of haptics in consumption. Sensory and experiential branding and their impact upon fashion consumption behaviours is an area I’m looking to explore more deeply with colleagues.

My focus is on big picture sustainability including recycling pre and post-consumer waste, upcycling, as well as artisan collaborations, I an author of two books on the topic Eco Fashion (2010) and ReFashioned (2013) and write more a range of digital and physical magazines and webzines on the topic.
