We warmly invite you to enrol to the Fundamentals of Textile Fibres course, a masterclass bringing together a range of fashion and textiles experts at the University of Leeds!

The course is provided by the Professional Academy for Creative Enterprise (PACE), a pioneering organisation within the School of Design at the University.

The School of Design boasts a rich history of expertise with roots dating back 150 years to 1874, when the Yorkshire College of Science was established. Since then, the subsequent development of the Departments of Textile Industries and Tinctorial Chemistry and Dyeing, collectively led to these becoming the founding academic disciplines at the University.

Over many years, textile and colour research at the University have helped establish Leeds as an international centre of excellence in these important fields, which continues today through research and teaching at LITAC.

PACE builds on this pedigree of design, technology, and creativity excellence. Working together with LITAC, it fosters meaningful industry partnerships and combines academic research with industry practice to offer a series of continual professional education courses to businesses and professionals.

Dr Mark Taylor, Research Fellow in Sport Clothing and Sustainability, is one of the first to deliver these courses, leading on the innovative ‘Fundamentals of Textile Fibres’ online module.

This flexible course provides an in-depth understanding of the origins, properties, and applications of natural and manmade fibres and how these elements affect the look, feel and performance of finished products.

It will examine the history of clothing and textile materials and how they have evolved over time, providing an overview of the main fibre types used in textile production, including natural and manmade fibres. Crucially, it will empower businesses to know why certain materials are chosen based on their properties and performance, helping to optimise further decision-making processes going forward.

As the course has been designed to facilitate professionals to select the best materials for specific applications and make more conscious and sustainable decisions, it is ideal for existing textile professionals (such as buyers, retailers, and designers) as well as beginners with no prior knowledge of textile production.
