Herd has two main businesses, Herdwear, Herdwool and we will soon be launching a Hand Knit business although they are separate, they all operate under the Herd label.
We are a sustainable heritage knitwear brand using 100% British Blue Faced Leicester wool that is grown, processed, made and finished within 150 miles of the farms based in Yorkshire and Lancashire. We pay farmers a fair price for their fleeces, raising the price each year to support the British wool industry and keep them incentivised.
Our core values naturally fit in with your research theme – digitally connected and sustainable processes by exploring new ways to manufacture textile waste into high value products. We are very interested in meeting other businesses with similar aspirations while supporting the Yorkshire textile heritage.

- What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: We would like to grow our retail, yarn and hand-knit to consumer sales to in turn drive the volume we can buy from the farmers to re-energise the local wool industry and build strong relationships between farm and consumer. We would like to expand our range of naturally dyed yarns to be able to offer a full colour range of naturally produced, circular yarns to our customers. Our aspirations are all around regenerative agriculture and the potential for this to sequester carbon and assist in the fight against climate change.
- What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: We would like to explore a large-scale indigo dyeing capacity at our current dye house Park Valley Dyers, based in Huddersfield. We would also like to invest in any new machinery or infrastructure that would be required for the project. We feel that natural dyeing facilities on a commercial scale is currently under developed, and projects like this will make it more accessible in the future.
