Doppelhaus Ltd
As Doppelhaus, we see ourselves as the first nonwoven textile designers, creating aesthetic and design-led sustainable materials for higher value applications in fashion and textiles. We take low value abundant (often natural) fibres and process these using large scale nonwoven textile technologies. Our knowledge of nonwoven production and training in textile design allows us to turn undervalued fibres into appealing but cost-effective fabrics that can compete with imported woven synthetics. Our first material Cloudwool® is made entirely from low value British wool and our mission is to raise the value of UK wool and simultaneously bring pure wool fabrics back into high street fashion at a democratic, accessible price point.

- What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: Thanks to a grant from BFTT for our R&D project ‘Re-Patri8’, we have been able to build a fully UK-based supply chain for Cloudwool, whereas we had previously been relying on German manufacturing, which no longer makes sense post-Brexit. Thanks to this project (ending Sep 2021) we have successfully improved the range and qualities we can offer under our Cloudwool brand, so we hope this will now enable us to target mass market fashion companies. Our main aspirations are to be able to manufacture ‘cradle to cradle’ fabrics cost-effectively within the UK, and for these fabrics to be used in fashion/interior products that are available at a price point accessible to everyone. We believe sustainable materials cannot be a luxury.
- What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: We would love to develop a solution for post-consumer second-hand fibres from textiles consumed in the UK, as this is a huge waste fibre stream that is often overlooked. We would like to partner with textile recyclers and nonwoven manufacturers in the UK in order to develop an aesthetically appealing material made from waste fibres.
