Clare Lane
My interest is in the cross-over between material science in textile production and the designer-maker. Specifically, the use and re-use of blended fibres as an alternative to re-cycling solutions. How might textile designers engage in a more systematic, design focussed way with waste textiles the industry currently produces?
Alongside this my interest is also in surface pattern designer’s role in waste reduction, through both the physical: print processes dyes and materials, and how this might impact future design trends and aesthetics.

- What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: As an Educator, my aspirations are to facilitate student engagement with more creative approaches to textile pattern design which embed the key principles of circular design. The focus would be on considered re-use of materials, and a greater understanding of how the application of colour processes impact the environment. As a Practitioner, my interest is in the waste textiles and clothing that are already in existence and difficult to re-cycle. Currently this area of textile and fashion design is seen as end-use, low tech adaptation on a domestic or designer-maker level at best. How might this aspect of re-use be elevated, and re-engineered at the high tech, high end of the fashion industry? How might this also encourage textile manufacturers to consider the quality of the materials they are producing in the first instance to build in re-use and adaptation?
- What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: Partnerships with other designers, both textile and fashion to investigate re-use of materials as a high-end option in fashion futures. Of particular interest would be research into more systematic approaches which might be disseminated across the industry with a view to embedding circularity in both design and materials used to facilitate potential adaptive re-use as a second stage in the life-cycle of a garment.
