Carolina De Lara
Although from a leather and footwear background, my interests have shifted towards biomaterials (especially bacterial cellulose) and circular/regenerative fashion economies. My design process begins at material stages, which involve rethinking the making methodology from a ground up, and includes a collaborative element with these non-human organisms that later become textile materials.
Considering the nature of my design interests, I have had to become quite resourceful when looking for ways to realise my designs and go through the learning curb of understanding the scientific process of laboratory environments paired with an artistic/design output. During this process I have also learn how to communicate and build relationships with people from several different areas and have become an effective cross-disciplinary communicator.

- What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: I’m planning to further my research in biomaterials through doctoral studies after graduating from my MA degree. For my personal practice a degree of industrial involvement is crucial to apply this research track in real-world situations that can effectively create change in the fashion industry, so long term I am planning on standing at an intersection where industry and academia can collaborate.
- What type of experience are you hoping to gain through Future Fashion Factory?: I’m primarily interested in networking with professionals involved in the biomaterial, footwear and knit industries, although I’m always happy to hear from other disciplines. And of course work experience is something I am interested in as well.
