The True Cost of Fashion

22 March, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

A seminar presented by the Technical Textile Team at the University of Huddersfield, discussing the innate disadvantages of the growing fast fashion industry, and what changes could be made to make a more sustainable circular economy.

Supported by the Future Fashion Factory, this exciting seminar will explore research with a combination of dynamic talks and hand on demonstrations highlighting how the fashion industry can be made more eco-friendly.

  • Professor Parik Goswami will present his research on sustainable fibres, the building blocks of textiles. He will examine what sustainability really means for textiles, and why this issue is more complex than what we think for the future of the fashion industry!
  • Dr Andrew Hewitt will introduce the cotton industry and a circular economy, exploring the benefits of Fairtrade cotton on sustainability.
  • Sarah Agar-Brennan will give a dynamic talk discussing the true costs of fashion, exploring the problems of fast fashion in contrast to an ethically sourced, Fairtrade Ruby Moon garment. With the opportunity to view and handle Ruby Moon swimwear.

This event will take place in room JPG/27 at the University of Huddersfield.
