 Fashion & Textile Professionals

I am a senior lecturer in textile technology and a PhD researcher in biomaterials.

Prior to my academic career I spent 18 years in industry in a variety of technology based roles ranging from car airbag development to children’s nightwear and everything in between!

I teach textile technology and innovation in the context of fashion to a range of students, both under and postgraduate, from backgrounds in business and marketing, through to design, technology and product engineering.

My PhD research straddles the worlds of textiles and microbiology, looking at how microbes can contribute to the textiles and fashion of the future.

I also have an interest in the accurate digital representation for fabric behaviours and performance.

  • What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: I am particularly interested in the translation of fabric into the digital arena. I feel that whilst digital design and garment creation has seen great leaps in development of software technology for the digital world, textiles and fabric are lagging. I would like to see a future where a piece of fabric could be developed on a small lab scale, tested in a textile lab and those results directly translate to an extremely accurate representation on the digital screen, allowing end uses in apparel to be explored before fabric is bulk produced.
  • What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: Textile technology and bio-fabrication links to the digital arena.
