SUMMARY:Research Afternoon: Digitisation and Communication of Fabric Tactile Properties
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ningtao Mao (University of Leeds) will speak at this dedicated event for fashion and textile researchers at Manchester Fashion Institute. \nFabric touch feel has been widely evaluated subjectively by a panel of experts/trained users. It is desirable to digitise fabric tactile properties using an objective system and communicate fabric tactile qualities with a universal language among engineers\, designers\, manufacturers\, retailers and consumers in fashion supply chain\, assisted with haptic sensory tools. This talk will give an overview of the ongoing work within the Future Fashion Factory project on objective quantification and digital communication of fabric tactile properties. \nNingtao Mao is Professor of Fibre and Textile Technology at the University of Leeds.  His research interests are focused on engineering design of functional fabrics and clothing as well as the characterisation\, digitisation and digitalisation of fabric tactile and drape properties. As part of the Future Fashion Factory R&D programme\, he is leading research into digital communication of the aesthetic properties of fabric.

SUMMARY:China Fashion Now: Inside China's Fashion Industry
DESCRIPTION:Professor Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas will take a broad look at China’s fashion industry. Learn about the past\, present and future of China’s key fashion city Shanghai and consider China’s potential role in a sustainable future for fashion. \nThe site of China’s first department stores and the heart of China’s tailoring industry\, Shanghai was associated both with innovations in fashion production and fashion retail\, particularly in the “Golden Age” of the 1920s and 1930s. But is Shanghai still the centre of China’s fashion scene\, and which other cities are emerging to compete for its crown as China’s pre-eminent fashion city? \nThe scale of China’s fashion footprint in textile and fashion production and consumption has enormous implications for the future of fashion. The talk will also discuss how the industry and consumers are responding to the challenges and opportunities of sustainable fashion. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Colour\, Light and Health: Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Professor Stephen Westland at the University of Leeds\, who leads Future Fashion Factory’s core research theme in data-driven design\, will present this talk at Huddersfield Textile Society. \nColour is ubiquitous in the world and is important in design and manufacturing. However\, this talk will explore the non-visual effects of colour and light\, particularly around the theme of health – including the health risks of being exposed to too much or too little light\, the effect of light on sleep and the importance of sleep to our health\, and the relationship between physiological and psychological effects of colour. \nThe talk has implications for the use of colour LED lighting\, the use of which is increasing rapidly as a result of technological\, sociological and legislative changes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Holly Hendry
DESCRIPTION:Holly Hendry presents a new sculpture installation developed with pioneering materials\, such as synthetic skins. \n\n\n\n\nThrough research with the University of Huddersfield – in particular Professor Parikshit Goswami of the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention – Hendry’s new direction of work explores the creative and unique possibilities of such new media. \nHendry graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2016 and quickly established a highly productive and respected practice. She was chosen by Helen Pheby\, Head of Curatorial Programme at YSP\, and Selfridges\, as the inaugural artist for the co-curated Art Block in Selfridges’ London flagship store. The resulting installation Phyllis\, at nearly four-metres tall\, featured rubble spoil from the construction of the new Duke Street Accessories Hall\, referencing issues of waste and recycling. The work takes its name from one of the digging machines which had to be abandoned underground after excavating tunnels for the London Crossrail dig.

SUMMARY:Clubhouse Fashion: The Sustainability Debate
DESCRIPTION:Future Fashion Factory industry partner Global Fashion Marketplace is an international business development agency supporting fashion brands to reach new international markets with our signature event\, Clubhouse Fashion. \nThe sustainability debate: When is fast fashion good fashion? \nFashion is a growing industry worldwide\, with eCommerce opportunities increasing the potential of global consumption\, it is said that consumers will also have more buying power and the number of potential customers is projected to grow to more than 1.2 billion by 2020. \nThis huge growth potential raises very crucial questions about sustainability. Do consumers really want more products or do they want more quality products that last? Is slow fashion the answer? \nIs it time to take a closer look at how consumers are engaging with sustainability?  At Clubhouse Fashion we will be exploring these topics and more\, busting some myths with our sustainability debate. \nThe question is\, should sustainability be the responsibility of the consumer? \nSpeakers include Mark Sumner\, lecturer in Sustainability\, Fashion and Retail at the University of Leeds with specialist knowledge of the clothing industry and its associated global textile supply chain. His current research topics include sustainability of textile supply chains\, circularity\, microplastics\, modern slavery and consumer behaviour.

SUMMARY:Digital Storytelling - How Brands are using Technology to Innovate
DESCRIPTION:The emergence of digital has provided brands with a huge array of new tools and channels with which to communicate with the consumer.  Using advanced tools such as mixed reality\, artificial intelligence\, big data\, blockchain\, drones and holography\, brands are reinventing customer relationships and transforming the way in which brands talk to customers\, whether it using online channels or in physical stores\, or indeed on the catwalk. \nJonathan Chippindale is Chief Executive of Holition. Formed as a venture start-up over a decade ago\, Holition has been at the forefront of helping brands understand the opportunities across a wide variety of these technologies. Holition lives as a vibrant community of experts that engage in the open exchange of knowledge\, constantly exploring nascent technology to create new narratives of digital experience. It speaks the language of mathematicians\, scientists\, strategists\, makers\, anthropologists and artists which allows it to create user-centric solutions that sit outside of the outputs delivered by traditional creative agencies\, software development companies or trend consultancies. \nHolition’s carefully curated network and open minded approach allows us to function as a think-tank\, designing empathic technologies that celebrate and enhance the very notion of being human. \nThis free event will be followed by tea and coffee and networking. The presentation and questions will last approximately 1 hour. \nEmail Laura Hartley at l.j.hartley@leeds.ac.uk if you would like to attend. \nFind the School of Music on the campus map
