This will be followed by a demonstration by Rosa Hutchesson of the Apex Design System. \nSally Smallwood\, WRECKREATION \nFrom her design studio in Annfield Plain\, Sally and her team design and hand-make some of the most amazing garments you’ve ever seen\, taking inspiration from motor racing and sci-fi\, with a healthy dose of Nietzsche thrown in for good measure. Given some of her sources of inspiration\, it’s no surprise that she recently caught the eye of the Shelby Corporation\, home of the legendary AC Cobra\, GT 500 and other iconic muscle cars. \nSally will be giving us an update on her recent trip to the US\, and share some of the inspiration behind her latest Shelby inspired range.

SUMMARY:Research Afternoon: Digitisation and Communication of Fabric Tactile Properties
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ningtao Mao (University of Leeds) will speak at this dedicated event for fashion and textile researchers at Manchester Fashion Institute. \nFabric touch feel has been widely evaluated subjectively by a panel of experts/trained users. It is desirable to digitise fabric tactile properties using an objective system and communicate fabric tactile qualities with a universal language among engineers\, designers\, manufacturers\, retailers and consumers in fashion supply chain\, assisted with haptic sensory tools. This talk will give an overview of the ongoing work within the Future Fashion Factory project on objective quantification and digital communication of fabric tactile properties. \nNingtao Mao is Professor of Fibre and Textile Technology at the University of Leeds.  His research interests are focused on engineering design of functional fabrics and clothing as well as the characterisation\, digitisation and digitalisation of fabric tactile and drape properties. As part of the Future Fashion Factory R&D programme\, he is leading research into digital communication of the aesthetic properties of fabric.

But is Shanghai still the centre of China’s fashion scene\, and which other cities are emerging to compete for its crown as China’s pre-eminent fashion city? \nThe scale of China’s fashion footprint in textile and fashion production and consumption has enormous implications for the future of fashion. DESCRIPTION:With huge potential to produce more durable and resilient structures\, 3D weaving is increasingly popular in industries from aerospace to medical technology. It also offers fantastic opportunities for the fashion and textile industry\, from technical textiles to producing seamless garments. \nDr Lindsey Waterton Taylor will introduce the principles and potential of 3D weaving over lunch at the University of Leeds’ 3D Weaving Innovation Centre. We will then travel to the premises of Optima 3D in Huddersfield for a closer look at their new Series 500 loom to see 3D weaving in action. \nLunch will be provided at the University of Leeds and refreshments at Optima 3D. We will provide transport between the University and Optima 3D premises\, but guests are also welcome to make their own arrangements or attend one of the two parts of the workshop. DESCRIPTION:Professor Stephen Westland at the University of Leeds\, who leads Future Fashion Factory’s core research theme in data-driven design\, will present this talk at Huddersfield Textile Society. \nColour is ubiquitous in the world and is important in design and manufacturing. However\, this talk will explore the non-visual effects of colour and light\, particularly around the theme of health – including the health risks of being exposed to too much or too little light\, the effect of light on sleep and the importance of sleep to our health\, and the relationship between physiological and psychological effects of colour. \nThe talk has implications for the use of colour LED lighting\, the use of which is increasing rapidly as a result of technological\, sociological and legislative changes.
