DESCRIPTION:The fashion industry is having urgent conversations about how to lessen its environmental impact\, from the challenges of growing and processing raw materials responsibly to closing the loop in manufacturing. \nAward-winning fashion designer Phoebe English will share her approach to sustainability in the design and production of her eponymous brand. Using examples from her most recent collection and ongoing research\, Phoebe will discuss how she has embedded circularity into her design practice and the wider business. \nAbout Phoebe English \nThe PHOEBE ENGLISH label\, founded in 2011\, creates pieces with close attention to detail and quality\, rejecting mass-made or ‘fast’ fashion. All production is made in London\, meaning the footprint from sketch to garment is minimised and the entire business operates from one studio in South London. The brand’s dual roots of craftsmanship and reduced negative environmental impact are never sacrificed where possible and a bedrock sense of producer responsibility underlies all decisions from design to business and. The growth of the brand proves to be tackling obstacles that have been put in place within the traditional fashion and retail sectors\, and aims to look at design as a solution-based opportunity to respond the extreme environmental times we live in. \nThe clothing comprises an ever-evolving search for communicative design and construction\, exploring a personal narrative through surface structure\, and textile engineering. As well as employing a straightforward\, natural and utilitarian nature. \nPhoebe English trained at Central Saint Martins where she completed both BA and MA in Fashion. On graduation\, she was awarded the L’Oreal Professional Prize\, Ungaro Bursary and Chloe Award. She has been nominated for both emerging Menswear and Womenswear categories several times and has worked across a wide variety of disciplines and organisations\, regularly guest lecturing in leading Universities.

DESCRIPTION:When and where do fashion designers create intellectual property (IP)? How can IP be protected? When should you seek legal advice?  \nIP is more than copyright and trade secrets. This talk will introduce the IP issues fashion designers need to consider when launching and growing a brand\, from the assets that can and cannot be protected to how Brexit is changing the law and the questions around IP in digital design.  \nAndrew Bravin is a Partner in the Digital Media\, Advertising and Brands\, Technology and Fashion and Design Groups at Sheridans.  \nAndrew advises clients on a range of issues\, with specialist expertise in intellectual property rights (disputes and licensing) and commercial law. He has worked with a number of start-ups in the creative industries guiding them on intellectual property\, commercial contracts\, contract negotiation\, advertising and regulatory compliance. Andrew also has considerable experience dealing with intellectual property and contractual disputes.

Attention\, though\, has focused on production and distribution challenges for industry during global lockdowns\, while little has been given to impact of Covid-19 on the management of risks of modern slavery within supply chains. \nIn this Ideas in Practice webinar\, we share insights from recent research looking at the response of UK fashion brands to the COVID-19 crisis\, actions of suppliers within Indian supply chains and the tensions that the crisis exacerbates in balancing risks for buyers and suppliers alike. \nA panel of experts then share their views on the lessons learned from the COVID-19 crisis to improve the management of the risks of modern slavery within extended supply chains across various industries. Delivered by KTN Global Alliance\, the missions provide an expert-led evidence base to strengthen Innovate UK’s global investment strategy: how and where it should invest to create UK business opportunities in partnerships with key economies. \nThis event will present the findings of the US and France Expert Missions and give delegates the opportunity to talk directly with representatives who went on the Missions. In October 2019\, an Expert Mission travelled to the US visiting New York City and Providence\, Rhode Island to inform the UK’s international strategy for Sustainable Innovation in Fashion by exploring the landscape and examining opportunities to collaborate with US organisations. \nProfessor Stephen Russell\, Director of Future Fashion Factory\, will be among the speakers.

DESCRIPTION:Join Danielle Elsener for a special workshop exploring her zero-waste fashion design system\, A020. \nDanielle will share the history behind A020 and how it relates to existing design practices. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about her approach\, as well as creating a paper mockette of a zero-waste pattern that you can translate onto fabric at home. \nThis workshop is aimed at fashion designers with a basic understanding of pattern cutting. You will need A4 paper\, tape\, a ruler\, pencil and scissors. \nAbout Danielle Elsener \nDanielle Elsener has devoted her life’s work to proving zero waste as a valid and robust design model. Having worked as a designer at Nike\, she graduated from MA Fashion at the Royal College of Art in 2019.
