SUMMARY:Online Fashion and Textiles Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:We warmly invite you to join us for this seminar\, collaboratively organised by the Textiles and Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing and Management research groups. This event is supported by The Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC) a world leading research institute\, of which Future Fashion Factory represents the fashion pillar. \nThe first half of the seminar will be delivered by Professor Sandy Black in a session titled\, ‘Publishing with Fashion Practice.’ \nThe talk will outline the origins\, purpose and scope of the academic journal Fashion Practice: Design\, Creative Process and the Fashion Industry\, a Routledge journal. It will include insights into the review process and route to publication\, including examples from past issues over the last 15 years. \nThe second half of the seminar will be delivered by Professor Andrew Groves in a session titled\, ‘Inside the Westminster Menswear Archive.’ \nThe Westminster Menswear Archive (WMA) was founded in 2016 as a teaching collection at the University of Westminster in London. Recognising the relative lack of menswear in other fashion and museum collections\, the objective of the WMA was to establish a substantial teaching collection centred on men’s garments that could be used for object-based research by both design students and the fashion industry. Industry users include designers from Burberry\, Versace\, McQueen\, C.P. Company\, and Adidas. The presentation will focus on the establishment of the WMA\, its work with students\, researchers\, and industry\, and the exhibitions that have resulted from the collection’s formation. \nAbout the Speakers: \nProfessor Sandy Black – Professor of Fashion and Textile Design and Technology\, London College of Fashion\, UAL\, Sandy is a Research Professor working at the intersections of fashion and textile practice\, design for sustainability\, technology\, business and culture. Sandy has published pioneering texts on sustainable fashion and design and on knitwear design\, history and technology. Recent work brings academic research and the designer fashion sector together through dialogue and collaborative projects\, focusing on the role of creative entrepreneurship\, design\, new business models and innovative technology application in addressing issues of sustainability in fashion. Sandy founded and is editor-in-chief of the journal Fashion Practice: Design\, Creative Process and the Fashion Industry\, published since 2009. \nProfessor Andrew Groves – Andrew Groves is Professor of Fashion Design at the University of Westminster\, London\, and the Director of the Westminster Menswear Archive which he established in 2016. It is the world’s only publicly accessible menswear archive\, containing over 2500 examples of some of the most important menswear garments covering the last 275 years. It is used by industry and students on a daily basis to inform their design practice. \nPlease confirm your attendance on Eventbrite\, and join using the Microsoft Teams access link in the ‘location’ section of the event page.

SUMMARY:Inside Future Fashion Factory: Digital Communication of Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to Future Fashion Factory members only. \n\n\nSome properties of fabrics and garments\, such as handle\, drape and fit\, are difficult to communicate objectively. As a result\, fabric swatches and sample garments are transported around fashion supply chains\, while customers often return products purchased online. \n\n\nChaired by Professor Ningtao Mao\, who leads Future Fashion Factory’s research in the communication of aesthetics\, this webinar will explore the digital tools being created to accurately convey information about how fabrics look and feel.  \n\n\nSee some of these new technologies in action and find out how they can help to shorten product lead times\, cut carbon emissions and reduce waste in fashion design and manufacturing. \nEmail contact@litac.leeds.ac.uk to receive the event invite.

SUMMARY:Life of Colour Seminar Series: Colour and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:The Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour in association with VeriVide are pleased to present the Life of Colour Seminar Series. \nIn the first seminar of the series Stephen Westland will review several recent research projects from the University of Leeds that explore the effects of coloured lighting and environments on human wellbeing and performance. \nThere are at least two distinct biological mechanisms for these effects; one of these is autonomous and tends to be similar for different people whereas the other is more cognitive and tends to show individual variation. Conflicting findings in the literature may occur because these two mechanisms have not been widely understood.

SUMMARY:School of Design Guest Lecture: A Colour Communication System for Textile Supply Chain Management
DESCRIPTION:Digital colour technology has long been available for use by the global supply chain in the textile industry. However\, it has yet to achieve total appearance reproduction including both colour and texture. A new computer system named LEDSimulator was developed to achieve this. It reduces the design cycle from months to weeks. At the same time\, it assures a high degree of colour reproduction accuracy between different systems. \nAbout the Speaker \nOver the past 35 years Professor Ming Ronnier Luo (University of Zhejiang) has made an exceptional contribution to colour science and colour technology in both academia and industry. From 2004 to 2015 he was Professor of Colour Science at the University of Leeds\, UK where he is still a visiting professor. He is a Fellow of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) and Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T). \nProf Luo has always worked closely with industry and is author of 25 patents within areas of colour technology. Many of his new technologies have become successful industrial products\, in collaboration with major international companies such as AkzoNobel\, J&P Coats\, Hewlett Packard\, Huawei\, LG Displays\, OPPO\, Philips Industries\, Samsung\, Unilever\, and VeriVide.

SUMMARY:Phoebe English: What Sustainability Means To Me
DESCRIPTION:The fashion industry is having urgent conversations about how to lessen its environmental impact\, from the challenges of growing and processing raw materials responsibly to closing the loop in manufacturing. \nAward-winning fashion designer Phoebe English will share her approach to sustainability in the design and production of her eponymous brand. Using examples from her most recent collection and ongoing research\, Phoebe will discuss how she has embedded circularity into her design practice and the wider business. \nAbout Phoebe English \nThe PHOEBE ENGLISH label\, founded in 2011\, creates pieces with close attention to detail and quality\, rejecting mass-made or ‘fast’ fashion. All production is made in London\, meaning the footprint from sketch to garment is minimised and the entire business operates from one studio in South London. The brand’s dual roots of craftsmanship and reduced negative environmental impact are never sacrificed where possible and a bedrock sense of producer responsibility underlies all decisions from design to business and. The growth of the brand proves to be tackling obstacles that have been put in place within the traditional fashion and retail sectors\, and aims to look at design as a solution-based opportunity to respond the extreme environmental times we live in. \nThe clothing comprises an ever-evolving search for communicative design and construction\, exploring a personal narrative through surface structure\, and textile engineering. As well as employing a straightforward\, natural and utilitarian nature. \nPhoebe English trained at Central Saint Martins where she completed both BA and MA in Fashion. On graduation\, she was awarded the L’Oreal Professional Prize\, Ungaro Bursary and Chloe Award. She has been nominated for both emerging Menswear and Womenswear categories several times and has worked across a wide variety of disciplines and organisations\, regularly guest lecturing in leading Universities.
